Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series
The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
